Luckily, our lodge advised us to have a tuktuk for the day to see these ruins and I'm so glad we did. They are vast and cover a huge area, though not as large as Anuradhapura. They are about 1000 years old and the sight was a royal capital. There is an excellent archeology museum which shows models of how many of the buildings might have looked, which is really helpful, because there are just foundations and remains of walls, everywhere you walk. There are a few remaining Buddhas in temple areas. The informative plaques are helpful. It is beautiful and peaceful and there are always monkeys to watch.
